I've been using Lighttools® Soft Egg Crates® for two or three years. They are really important, because I frequently work with dark backgrounds and high contrast. This is especially true when I shoot on location, where I often have to deal with small rooms with white paint. The Soft Egg Crates® help me keep the shadow contrast nice and dark. They keep the main light from contaminating the background.
Before Lighttools® developed Soft Egg Crates®, I used soft boxes and scrims. They were a lot more work. For me its convenience: Soft Egg Crates® are really time savers. And they allow me to shape the light a lot more. The biggest thing is the time they save, that, and the fact that they're quick to put on, not rigid, and easily transportable.
We actually used the (Soft) Egg Crates® as a creative tool on the Thomas Ackerman shot used in this website. The specular highlights are broken up on the grid appearing on his glasses.
